November 14, 2016. Command Investigations and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office (BSO) announce that former Broward County Sheriff’s Office deputy Nicolas Carreno has plead guilty to insurance fraud.
Carreno must serve 5 years’ probation and was ordered to pay $65,350 in enforceable restitution to Gallagher Bassett Insurance, as well as $2,091.71 in investigative costs to the Florida Department of Financial Services, Division of Insurance Fraud (DIF).
Carreno made false and inaccurate statements during a sworn deposition for the purpose of financial gain, and pled guilty to the following charge:
F.S. 440.105-4b(3) – Workers’ Compensation Fraud – Misrepresenting or omitting info regarding W/C Claim in excess of $100K.
While working as a deputy, Carreno alleged he felt a sharp pain in his lower back while lifting his laptop out of the trunk of his patrol car. Following the incident, he complained of severe leg and back pain.
During a sworn deposition in September of 2013, Carreno stated that he required a wheelchair to get around and could only stand momentarily without the support of a walker. He also claimed he couldn’t drive and required transportation.
However, from November of 2013 to February of 2014 Command Investigations obtained video of Carreno performing a variety of tasks without the use of a wheelchair or walker. Command Investigations secured long-term video surveillance footage of Carreno driving his vehicle and walking without any restrictions.
Command Investigations utilized their investigative results to refer Carreno’s insurance claim to the Florida Division of Insurance Fraud (DIF), as statutorily required under Florida Statute 626.9891.
The complex investigation spanned several years, and was guided by Command’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU).
