May 11, 2016.  Command Investigations and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office announce the arrest of Nicolas Carreno for insurance fraud.

Carreno, a former Broward County Sheriff’s Office deputy, was arrested for workers’ compensation fraud on May 3, 2016 in Broward County, Florida, and was released on $1,000 bail.

Carreno made false and inaccurate statements during a sworn deposition for the purpose of financial gain, and was arrested in violation of the following Florida Statute:

F.S. 440.105-4b(3) – Workers’ Compensation Fraud – Misrepresenting or omitting Info regarding W/C Claim in excess of $100K.

While working, Carreno allegedly felt a sharp pain in his lower back while lifting his laptop out of the trunk of his patrol car. He then complained of severe leg and back pain stemming from the incident.

During medical appointments and in a sworn deposition in September of 2013, Carreno stated that he required a wheelchair to get around and could only stand momentarily without the support of a walker. He claimed he could not drive and required transportation.

However, from November of 2013 to February of 2014, Command obtained video of Carreno conducting various tasks without the use of a wheelchair or walker. Long-term video surveillance footage was obtained by Command documenting Carreno driving his vehicle and walking without any restrictions.

Based upon these investigative results, Command Investigations referred the claim to the Florida Division of Insurance Fraud (DIF) as required under Florida Statute 626.9891 based on material misrepresentation.

From start to finish, the complex fraud investigation into Carreno was a long-term investigation that lasted several years, and was spearheaded by Command’s Special Investigations Unit.

All parties are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
